Dear Chicago Police,
I work in this building, here is my key card. Now, let me cross the damn yellow tape and barricade. Do not tell me “It was advised to stay home today during the NATO protests.” My company didn’t let people stay home, we had to come to work.
I hate you.

Operation woo Katia 2k12 has started.
that was TOO easy
within 2 mins of speaking with my mum re: my rent being raised to $840 she said, “re-sign your lease. it’s the perfect space for you, it’s close to everything, and I don’t want to pay for movers.” I’ll take her logic, even if it’s crazy (‘cause movers would only cost like $300.).
oh. OKAY!
casa de katia will be open through May2k13 y’all. same perfect spot. same adorable apartment. same 3 pairs of spare keys to hand out to guests.
$840
That is what my $800 1bd/private patio off of bedroom/2walk in closets/walk in pantry courtyard/ “Your apartment looks like the one from While You Were Sleeping” is going to be raised to if I re-sign my lease.
If you know the Lakeview area where I live, you know how great it is. How adorable my place is. How it’s a 15 min gypsy cab ride anywhere, how i can stumble home from Berlin at 4am and feel safe……but..$840!?
I know it’s “cheap” for these parts, but..I just don’t know..should I stay or should I go?
Anyone have any good relaters in Chicago? My guy moved to Europe.

Happy Pulaski day! A holiday that just absolutely does not exist to you if you’re not from the Chicago area!

Whiskey with the ghost of Al Capone at The Green Mill. A blind old man playing jazz tunes on the harpsichord behind the bar. I love this place because it’s like stepping back into time. So much mafia history here.
“People fall out of the world sometimes, but they always leave traces, little things you can’t quite account for: faces in photographs; luggage; half eaten meals; rings. Nothing is ever forgotten, not completely, and if something can be remembered, it can come back.” - The Doctor
Earlier this month when I went home, I had discovered that I inherited my grandmother’s vintage Minolta Hi-Matic AF2. It wasn’t until weeks later I noticed there was film in it. I had no idea how old the film was. My grandmother had passed, it will be two years this spring. I deduced the film must be at least that old, if not older.
I picked up the photo CD from Walgreens today. Eagerly I waited until I reached home and could discover the unknown remnants. Like Howard Carter discovering King Tutankhamun’s tomb, I waited with bated breath.
These were the only two pictures to survive the years in that vintage Minolta. Like a sign from the universe, Cloud Cult’s song, “Transistor Radio” came on my MacBook Pro. That song, always and will forever remind me of my grandfather, and our talks before he died.
You see, my grandfather died a few months after these picture were taken. They came to Chicago to see me perform in Mozart’s, Die Zauberflöte (The Magic Flute). I was 20 years of age. These photos are 11 years old. Watching him deteriorate with Alzheimer’s disease, and ultimately brain cancer was one of the hardest times of my life. By then he referred to me only as “the girl” and would say, “When is the girl going to come and sing?”
These two pictures from May 2001 survive. As do the words of my grandfather, “You keep going. You stick it out, you believe in your passions, and you find your own adventure. Your life wont wait for you, so you create it.”
I keep going where it seems I’m meant to go. I finally realized what he wanted to show me. Where I’ve been, where I am, is the show.
